Between the town of Arta and the mountainous area of Tzoumerka and at an altitude of 140m is the lake of Pournari. It is an artificial lake, 8th in the list of the lake’s craftsmen, created by the collection of the waters of the river Arachthos and the construction of a dam near Pournari settlement from which it was named, the dam and the lake.
It is the second largest dam in Greece and retains the waters of Arachthos, controlling the flow of the river, which passes through the city of Arta. The lake hosts many varieties of fish, such as carp, birch, wild trout, eth. There are also many birds, such as greenheaded ducks, alcines, river brigands and others.
Particularly interesting to the lake is the part of the settlement of Kato Calentini, which was abandoned and partially destroyed when the dam was created.
The fall of the lake, which occurs at times, reveals some old houses and other buildings, creating a mysterious backdrop, most impressive of all, The old primary school that is the largest of these.
